I've not read the Fellwater Tales, from which Jillian Brighton is a spin-off, but I found I didn't need to. The premise of the story - that 13-year-old Jillian finds parallel worlds through a special telescope is enchanting and has a lot of potential, but I felt sold short on the concept with this novella.
Jillian as a character is sassy, smart and has a lot of spunk, but is also easily led by her best friend Johnny-o; which to me went against the grain of her character.
The story is heavy on the philosophy regarding truth, knowledge, existence, growing up and trust; has secret societies; clues within books; magical/scientific artefacts; and other elements which if extended could make for an interesting full-length novel. However,in a 51-page novella I found the philosophical portions weighty in comparison to the fantasy and narrative elements.
This highly philosophical approach also left me wondering about the intended audience - most of it seemed suitable for young teenagers, but there are some passages that appeared to be written for adults, and the small font size is also more adult than young reader.
I would have liked to see more made of the discovery of different worlds, and feel this story would make a great contemporary fantasy novel, or even series, if the fantasy and main premise were expanded; the text better edited (there were many typos); and the philosophical content was more integrated into the storyline.
Basically, it left me wanting to know more about the discoveries, and what the characters would do with that knowledge.
